Puppet: System Administration Automated

Speaking at OScon

This is a post from Luke's old blog; it is saved here statically for historical purposes, as of October 2008

After my complaint last week about O'Reilly's treatment of operations, Tim O'Reilly emailed me directly. A few emails later, Nat Torkington notified me that they had some cancellations and thus there was a speaking slot available to me if I were interested.

Of course I was interested, so last night I booked a flight to Portland, Oregon (I lived there for six years while attending Reed College and afterward, so it feels like home to me), and now I'm trying to figure out how exactly to present Puppet.

I've been trying to focus more on Puppet's role as an operating system abstraction layer, because I think that's more fundamentally different than a configuration management tool, but Puppet's utility as a tool is clearly critical to any discussion of Puppet.

For those interested in getting an idea of what the presentation will be like, you can check out my presentation from BayLISA. My speaking slot at OScon will be 45 minutes, and the content should be significantly updated -- the BayLISA presentation was done on about one hour's notice and was originally presented to the Atlanta Unix User's Group a couple of months earlier.

I'd love to hear ideas for what to focus on in my presentation, so if you've got some feedback or input (other than "hey, don't say 'um' so much -- I'm trying), please send it along to luke at madstop.com.
